Yosuke has the best damned swagger ever

In Character Information
Name: Yosuke Hanamura
Series: Persona 4
Age: 17 years old
Birthday & Astrology Sign: June 22nd, Cancer
Arcana: The Magician

Personality:

Yosuke is a very cheerful, enthusiastic guy, with a bit of a teasing, playful streak to him. He can be silly, and at a glance, people would think that that was all there was to him - a carefree guy who can be a bit spazzy at times, and glib in others. However, this isn't quite true - although he likes to make sure that the IT is in high spirits through funny antics, when the going gets tough, he can buckle down and get shit done in a serious, focused way. This makes him the perfect right-hand man of Souji, the IT's leader, because he helps keeps a cheerful atmosphere, and is a reliable partner to have on hand.

Relating to that, although Yosuke can be silly, and therefore seem like an idiot at times, he is quite intelligent, and has decent enough deductive skills. Before Naoto, the ~*Ace Detective*~ of the group, joined them, most of the deduction was by Yosuke - and he did it quite well considering (hell even his theory of "THE TV WORLD IS EVERYONE'S MINDS" proved to be true). He can also prove to be quite perceptive, especially when he realises his own motivations for chasing after the murderer at the beginning, and how he was initially running away from the fact that Saki was dead by using the investigation as a distraction.

In this case, Yosuke can be pretty mature, even though he knows his faults can be in his childishness. After facing his Shadow in the TV World, Yosuke freely admits that he had been enthusiastic about the TV world and the murders, because he thought it was an adventure only they could do, something unique and exciting. Later on, Yosuke further confirms this by admitting that when he gained his Persona, he had been happy that he would be someone "special" at last. He eventually concludes that it doesn't matter what things you have, or where you live, but that it's the friends and family you keep, that eventually, you'd become "special" to someone. This is a large step from who he was at the beginning, a bored city boy hungering for recognition, and shows that he matured greatly in his friendship with Souji, and during the course of the investigation.

With this maturity, Yosuke can and did overcome his petty side as well. In the final Social Link Event with him, Yosuke finally came clean that he had always been jealous of Souji, of how naturally he fitted in with Inaba, awakened his Persona, and became everyone's leader. His solution to this was to demand Souji to hit him, so that they could stand on equal ground, and it turned into a friendly brawl that ended with Yosuke fully vented, and with a new determination on how he was going to live his life.

But why had he been so insecure, and had wished so desperately to be 'special' to someone? Hints of it arise in his Social Events, and even in The Magician manga, that Yosuke had struggled to make any close friends before moving to Inaba. He had been reluctant to change his phone number, even when getting a lot of spam, on the off chance someone on the city 'might' text or call him, even saying that there was no point calling them about his number change since some probably wouldn't even care, or even might get mad. Yosuke pretty much lived a life where everything was shallow, so it's no surprise that he had wished for bigger things, to be something special to at least one person in his life, instead of drifting from one casual friendship to the next. Thankfully, he found that someone with Souji, and the rest of the investigation team, and this makes him fiercely loyal to them as a result.

"Senpai...I'm going to live. Without lying to myself, without deceiving myself...days like today, days like before when I did nothing...they're all important days...they're all days you didn't live to see. I'm going to live them here."

SO LET'S TALK ABOUT SAKI.

All that maturity and development Yosuke went through? Yes, Souji was very important, and, indeed, acted as a catalyst for a few of them, being understanding and helpful towards Yosuke's examination of his motivations and character, and actively encouraging him. But Saki Konishi was the spark for all of this, and, indeed, the spark for the events of Persona 4. Because of Saki's death, Yosuke had the urge to return to the TV world with Souji. Because of Saki's death, Yosuke and Souji promised to find out who the killer was. Because of Saki's death, Yosuke gained the resources and motivation to overcome his loneliness and failings. If Saki never died, Yosuke wouldn't have had the thought to return to the TV World, and who knew how Persona 4 would have proceeded from that?

So, yes, Saki is a major part of the development of Yosuke's growth throughout the game. When first discussing that they were the only ones who could find out the truth about her death with Souji, it showed a glimmer of Yosuke's sense of justice. He is very passionate about his cause, about catching the killer, and although it was initially for revenge and to be deemed 'special', it eventually grew into a true sense of justice, especially when the fight with Izanami rolled around. Saying that, however, Yosuke can get carried away, linking to his aforementioned passion, and when they had Nametame in their grasp, he had considered killing him in revenge for the "death" of Nanako.

This is a pretty terrifying side of Yosuke, but it's there, just like his thirst for recognition and adventure. Cheerful and playful, yes, but Yosuke is also a very emotive young man, and can act impulsively when in the heat of the moment. His anger is also very harsh when roused, as shown when he blew up at two teenage girls when they started badmouthing Saki. He burns out quickly though, and will quickly laugh it off if he is able to. In fact, that's a running theme in some of his Social Link events - laughing serious or painful things off, and diverting attention onto another topic. He seems to cope with upsetting situations by turning to his playful side, which is a reasonable coping mechanism, until it starts helping him to avoid painful issues. Thankfully, by the end of his Social Link, Yosuke is well aware of his issues and shortcomings - well, until new ones crop up due to Souji's fuck up with Adachi...

In short, Yosuke's pretty much your usual teenager who went through a lot of self-realisations about himself. He's cheerful, silly, but is intensely loyal to his friends, and works hard to make sure they're all happy and to make sure justice is rightfully served to the true killer of Inaba.
